German Brainrot: The Pigeon Who Spoke Only Neu Deutsch

October 02, 2026

Every brainrot nation has its founding bird. Italy had its own wave — but before that wave ever broke, there was the pigeon. German Brainrot, or Germanrot, is a German-language brainrot genre of short parody videos, usually featuring a rendered, animated pigeon living out the most ordinary daily life you can imagine, narrated by a German AI text-to-speech voice. No plot, no stakes, just a pigeon. And the internet could not get enough.

The genre was born in mid-November 2024, started by TikToker @schnecke_123, a German creator who posted only a handful of videos. It didn't matter. Each one pulled in millions of views.

The founding meme is "einkaufen gehen" ("going shopping," Nov 11, 2024). Our pigeon strolls through a supermarket buying the most German things imaginable: snack salamis, Durstlöscher iced tea, Maggi sauce — and divorce papers, according to some sources. Narrated in that deadpan AI German voice, the clip racked up roughly 8 million plays and 1 million likes within two months. German press Augsburger Allgemeine put the 28-second clip at around 9.4 million views.

The follow-up, "schlafen gehen" ("going to sleep"), took a turn: the pigeon's bedroom gets invaded by the Penguins of Madagascar. Relief? Mercy? None. It topped 21 million views and 2.6 million likes within a month.

Then came the trend within the trend: the "Oha Eine Schlafparalyse" ("Oh, a sleep paralysis") meme. A pigeon in a Santa hat goes to bed and is struck by a sleep paralysis episode. Uploaded in late November 2024, it became a lip-dub and subtitled-editing trend across and beyond Germany by January 2025.

And of course, the icon: a "vertikal rotierender Fisch" — a vertically rotating fish. It was parodied so thoroughly that the internet now happily rotates fish horizontally and even diagonally, for reasons nobody fully signed off on.

Germanrot went properly international amid the US TikTok ban in mid-January 2025, when English-speaking viewers reported not understanding a word of the German — and finding it hilarious anyway.

Mainstream coverage followed. Die ZEIT published "Warum auf TikTok der Fisch rotiert" (Why the fish rotates on TikTok, March 2025), and its culture critic Ijoma Mangold compared some of the videos to Dadaism. German papers like Augsburger Allgemeine have patiently explained the "deutsche Taube" — the German pigeon — to their readers.

How does it relate to Italian brainrot? Germanrot is the earlier sibling: a parallel genre that predates the January 2025 Italian wave. It sits under the same big "brainrot" umbrella, a national cousin to the Italian trend rather than its parent or child.

So if you ever wonder why a pigeon is buying Maggi sauce at 9.4 million views: that's just Germanrot doing its thing. Neu Deutsch, spoken fluently by a bird who only ever goes shopping, sleeps, and rotates fish. Verstehen? You don't need to.

The pigeons work in weird, internet-native corners elsewhere too — poke around hermesnews.fdhcl.com and you may spot one doing tech-culture things.
